Mayer Leffingwell is promoting Project Energize, an initiative that will provide homes with low-interest financing for energy-efficient home upgrades. This opens the doors for homeowners interested in installing photovoltaic solar systems on their homes to low-interest loans. The homeowners would pay off their solar system through their property tax bill over an extended period of time.
This will allow homeowners to save money and be environmentally responsible. With the proposed energy increases (~10%/year), the payment on the solar system will quickly be less than the current electricity bill until the system is payed off.
Project Energy was created by Mayor Leffingwell, Mayor Pro Tem Martinex and Shade.
Mayor Leffingwell hopes that the program will promote renewable energy in Texas through making solar affordable. Since most homeowners cannot afford the $10,000-20,000 initial investment of solar, this provides an affordable means around the initial investment.
Also, the bill ties the payment of the solar system to the home. If homeowners sell their home, their home value increases (based on what they have paid off).
The demand for solar in increasing in Texas. Austin alone has seen growth from four solar installation companies to 22 in just the past few years. Hopefully, this bill brings photovoltaics mainstream in Texas and makes Texas a leader in photovoltaic research and distribution.
